[94]

In large bud with anthers beginning to dehisce & with far projecting stigma 5 sho stamens with small globular anthers, (of which one facing the standard is is longer than the others) here anthers beneath the 5 great sagittate anthers, (one of which apparently yields as much pollen as the 5 smaller ones). But when flower is mature, the shorter stamens with their knob-like anthers have pre grown longer than other the sagittate & have pushed a great cylinder of pollen all round & above the stigma & from above the 5 sagittate anthers. — Self-fertilisation inevitable.

Pollen in enormously greater quantity than required for self-fert.—

June 25' Lupinus

Lupinus pilosus (?) Linn.

Pollen in astonishing profusion

Fertilised 6 flowers under net by moving keel up & down several times with own pollen White Thread— Only one set—

Repeated on next day the movement

Fertilised 6 flowers, by first brushing off own pollen & then put on pollen from distinct plant not under net— Repeated process next day Black Thread. (This shows that they require much pollen or pollen at successive intervals.) And not one set.!!

But by putting on cap (& castration at early period) with pollen from other plant 2/4 set— so with L. luteus, treated in same manner 2/4 set.
