therefore it is probably owing to [tex excised] cause, namely that the intercrossed plants of the successive generations in table A becoming more & more related & thus deteriorated in constitution, that they did do not exceed in height the self-fertilised plants & this may be owing to there being more of [illeg] in the last generation in a greater & greater degree.  As far as fertility is concerned we now have conclusive evidence through the admirable experiments of Fritz Müller*(a) on with respect to the hybrids of Abutilon, that the union of brothers & sisters, parents & children, & other near relations is highly injurious.*(b))
