Ipomœa
My son also examined considered under the same point of view the plants of the 8th or 9th (?) [insertion:] Better to say as little as possible
generation of Ipomœa, in which case all the plants tall & short were measured, & here the irregularity of height of the self-fertilise was greater than with the crossed plants in the ratio of 100 to 142; & this no doubt may be accounted for by the self-fertilise being placed in [illeg] with the crossed & that of those which were beaten by the crossed were beaten till they were highly very seriously injured.

[19v]
In the other series which I considered the mean error for the self fertilised was 15.930 & that for the crossed was 11.229; that is to say the self- —fertilised were more irregular than the crossed in the proportion of 142 to 100
