Ipomœa 1872. summer

Procured fresh seed from Cattells & raised 2 plants, many flowers fert. with pollen from same flower & produced 26 pods, with 115 seed, ie. on average 4.42 seed per pod; all seed weighed & average gave for 100 seed 42.61 gr weight—

(Many fl. fert. by pollen from different flower, but on same plant, & 29 pods gave contained 141 seed, ie on average 4.86 seed per pod & 100 seed weighed only 36.77 gr in weight.

(Used)

Therefore this degree of crossing has increased the yield of seed nearly by 1/2 seed per pod; but these crossed seeds are decidedly lighter in the ratio of 100 to 86.— than the strictly self-fert seed!! Have they had less nutriment? In the crossed pods, 2 produced 8 seeds, which is very unusual number.
