themselves were heavier, so that 29 of them equalled in weight 100 of the seeds from the crossed flowers. The Some of the latter first swelled & then germinated before = 1st gen the self-fertilised seeds, (ie those produced by the self-fertilised flowers*) so that & I have on several other occasions observed that lighter & smaller seeds germinate quicker than heavier & larger ones of the same species. (Ipomœa)

These two lots of seeds were allowed to germinate on bare sand
