Feb. 27th 3 P.m 1867. A number of seeds, of themselves the second generation, of Ipomœa purpurea were sown; some fert. with produced by much pollen & some by little (& this produced no difference); some half produced fine flowers fertilised by pollen from same, & half by pollen of distinct plant; & the former self-fert certainly germinated first & more numerously in equal times & yet Heavier. On March 1' 8° A.m. of self-fertilised 5 seeds had swollen & 1 germ, whilst of crossed not one, though one germinated was swollen at 5° P.m same day & another germ on March 2d.

On March 5th 8 A m. 30 self-fert. seeds had swollen & germ. & only 10 of crossed had swollen & germ.

March 6th There can be no doubt whatever that self-fert seeds germinate quicker than others. 8th do do decided
