Peas

Jun 22 /73/ Frank has examined 3 common pea-flowers, which I gathered early in morning. & which had not petals fully expanded & which, judging from analogy, would not have been for a day or two visited by honey-sucking bees — yet the pollen-grains from 2 of these flowers had their tubes exserted — I have hardly a doubt that it is a case of premature fertilisation.— Jun 29th Frank has now examined 5 additional dry flowers which I gathered, & which were not quite fully expanded, & in all there were pollen-tube protruded & sometimes of considerable length. I think this satisfactory accounts for not intercrossing. (Probably stigmatic surface premature). (8)
