(Acids)

Gallic, Tannic, Tartaric & Citric acids.— : one part to 437 of water.— Three or four leaves were immersed together in 90 to 130 minims of each of these so that each respectively received 30 minims of these four acids of 1 part to 437 of water: No inflection was caused after 24h. & the leaves did not appear at all injured. Those leaves which had been thus immersed in the Tannic & Tartaric acids were then placed in the sol. (1 gr to 20 oz) of Phosphate of ammonia, but no inflection was caused caused after an additional 24h, as is likewise generally the case after an immersion for this length of time in water. On the other hand, the four leaves which had been thus immersed in the citric acid, when treated with the solution of the phosphate, became decidedly inflected in 50m, & strongly inflected after 5h, & so remained for the an additional next 24h.

Malic acid: three leaves were immersed together in 90 minims of a solution of 1 to 437 of water, caused & no inflection was caused after 8h 20m; but after 24h two of them were much & the third slightly inflected,— more so than could be excited accounted for by pure water. No great amount of
