for in six observed cases (in two, however of which, however, the gland was pinched off) the protoplasm within the cells of the tentacles did not become aggregated; whereas in some adjoining tentacles which had been roughly touched by the pincers & were inflected, when it was well aggregated.

The same result effect follows So it is with respect to the aggregation of the protoplasm,— when a leaf is instantly killed by being dipped into boiling water. On the other hand in several of the above cases, in which tentacles were cut off with sharp scissors close under their beneath the glands, & they became inflected, there was distinct though moderate aggregation of the protoplasm.)
