Clarkia elegans. 1867 — owing to wretched season hardly any seed set. (see former note on fertility).

12 flowers crossed yielded 4 pods with a good many seeds

18 self-fert. yielded only 1 pod, containing not above a fourth of seed of poorest crossed pod.

(May 17' In Pot I all the self after germinating & planted, died.)

(May 24th 68 — Plants 4—5 inches high crossed begin to show advantage.)

Plants now in full flower. (In both Pots selfs flowered first)

[Table partly excised, not transcribed] Perhaps give in small type all such measurements in detail. N.B. There is an obvious reason that crossed shd ever be higher than self. Chance!

(All the crossed plants together produced 105 pods
