(1865) (Conclusions)

8 fl. were crossed with pollen from distinct plant, & produced 6 capsules yielding average of 88.6 seed per capsule.

8 fl. were crossed with pollen either of same flower of same plant (& no difference in this respect) & set 7 capsules which yielded 82 seed per capsule.

In both cases the same maximum of 112 seed was once yielded. —

Of self-fertilised capsules, very many contained very few seed or none (yet one contained 113 seed) omitting capsule with only one seed — the average of 18 capsules gave only 18 seeds per capsule. —

One plant was more self-fertile than the others. It is clear that dichogamy checks self-fertility, not from nature of pollen, but still from its not getting on stigma.─
