(The plants, several in number set spontaneously not a single pod, nor did any other plants; yet on former years they have set several.) (Perhaps crushed, so say nothing)

(The crossed & self-fert seeds have germinated in nearly as possible equally)

Pot I & II 3 seeds of each lot, which were equally germinated planted. Pot III two whole row of germinated seeds, planted successively on opposite sides.—

(Oct. 6th. 67/ Each plant now has single leaf with peduncle about 1/2 inch high. In Pot I. plant equal; in the three other pots the leaves of the crossed plants are finest.)

(Dec. 30. 67. In all pots crossed & selfs equal; now 2—3 inches high to tips of leaves.)

(April 3d 68 In Pots 1, 2, & 3 Crossed now appear to have a very slight advantage.)

(June & July 68 The crossed plants in all pots have flowered some weeks before the self- & much more profusely; flowers very fine on very long peduncles.) which in Pot I were about 1 inch longer than on self Plant

June 22d 69. In Pot I the crossed plants produced spontaneously 5 pods, of which the largest contained 73 very fine seed— the selfs also produced 5 pods; but the seeds were hardly more than half the size of those by crossed Plants; incr only one pod contained any large seed; the best pod with even moderately good seed contained on 35 seed ie less than half of finest pod on crossed Plants.

In Pot II. The crossed plants produced 16 pods; the self not one

In Pot III. The crossed plants produced 5 pods; & the selfs not one.

In Pot IV the crossed produced 14 pods & self not one. —

It must not be supposed that the sterility of selfs is wholly due to their flowering so late, for the crossed continued flowering & producing seed-capsules. —

(The self Plants were all miserably small except in Pot III, & here the plants were very much smaller than the crossed Plants)
