Borago officinalis 1868

18 flowers crossed, produced & only 7 produced seeds, containing average of 2.00, max. 3 & one with 1 all the rest had 2 seeds.

6 flower art. fert. & produced only 1 with 1 seed; but some flowers produced spont. under net seeds.— 24 of these yielded average of only 1.20 seed, for all produced only 1 seed except 5 which produced 2 seed.

So the plant very much less fertile with own pollen. The flowers, however, from supporting only one seed made them rather finer.— Thus the 14 crossed seed weighed 4.55. gr. therefore 28 wd have weighed 9.10— now 28 of the self-fert seed weighed 10.13 grains.—

(June 6— 1869. The young plants in both Pots, now about 8 inches to tips of leaves about equal on both sides.)
