Two long rows of crossed & selfs planted in open ground in Kitchen Garden — (Very much fewer of selfs flowered.) — The 10 tallest carefully selected from each row

Owing to the crossed "being in advance & in fuller flower, there is less inequality between leaves & flower than with crossed

Hence perhaps the leaves often fairest standard of comparison — On average crossed to tips of leaves 54.0 inches higher than self 44. 5/10.

[Pot 1 note:] It is evident that in Pot I some accident occurred on crossed side , injuring all the Plants perhaps a grub at roots. no; at first start the crossed side was inferior, see former table.

[Pot 4 note:] Pot very small, so plant dwarfed

Total of all 10 Plants in Pots 2, 3, & 4— (Numbers must be checked.) to tips of male flowers & of 11 plant to tip of leaves.—

*These 2 plants did not produce male flowers at top of axis.

N. B. Best to trust to leaves

N. B. Try adding to leaves the 2 plants in Pot I
