Reseda lutea. July 15. 1871.

Seeds from plants spont. self-fert. under net (see notes somewhere) & crossed by Bees — There is some advantage in experiments tried this way. Seeds sown Seeds sown in 2 rows out of doors. — [Table excised]

Measured to tip of flower-stems now in full flower—

20 crossed Plants in the Row

32 self-plants in the Row

(8 Tallest plants measured in both rows)

I shd have thought the comparison quite uniform had not one of selfs been the tallest plant in lot; & had not the larger number of 32 selfs depended chiefly on a larger number of excessively small plants, which had never grown & could not have robbed the others of much nutriment.—

Give the Plants in Pots first.

July 22d 1871. Growth very nearly completed measured to tips of fl. stems.

Pots bedded out in open garden, but pots not disturbed removed.—

Aug. 29th 1871. Plants yet in flower, but many pods formed

25 crossed Plants weighed 5 lb. 10 1/2 oz = 90 1/2 oz

25 self-plants weighed. 1 lb 3 oz = 19 oz

ie crossed nearly 5 times as heavy as selfs!!!

The self-plants. (July & August) have paler coloured leaves & of smaller size

5 crossed did not flower

26 self Plants did not flower
