Bartonia aurea
Try a little more seed
12 flowers crossed — 18 flowers self-fert.
The 12 crossed set 11 pods (ie 92 per cent) & all the seed weighed 5.27 gr
The 18 self set 15 pods (ie 83 per cent) & all the seed weighed 6.76
Therefor 15 pods of crossed would have weighed 7.18 grain, or the crossed seed to the self seed are as 100 : 94. —
In all cases when number of seed estimated by weight, as self seed are generally lighter, their number ought wd be rather greater; probably in this instance the proportion wd be as as 100 : 95.
The seed of the Bartonia looks so shrivelled that perhaps will not germinate.— (The self- seeds on sand germinated best & quickest.)
(May 24. 68 — Plants about 7 inches selfs have the advantage)
(June 14th Pot. II. self- flowered first.)
(July 6. 68 Plants now in full flower. — Only 2 Pots alive

Bartonia aurea A fresh set of crosses 1868
6 flowers twice crossed by self-produced 4 pods & these contained by eye rather more seed than the best of 7 pods spontaneously of the self-fertilised. — young flowers were crossed. & self-fertilised
12 flowers were self-fertile by self & produced only 7 pods as above.
These plants in pots in greenhouse produced no pods spontaneously.
(May 16— 1869 young plants about 1 inch high no difference)
(May 28 1869 In Pot II & III. a self-plant has died, but no other in any other Pots) (& opposite crossed pulled up.—)

In the 3 plants which survived to set seed some few pods, the fertility appeared about equal on crossed & self- sides.—
