These plants in these 4 Pots were cut down close to ground last autumn & not disturbed, but put in rather larger pots. This cutting injured them, & out of the 7 self Plants 3 died & out of 7 crossed plants 1 died — so that Pots II & IV have been thrown away.

1868 Geranium

Lett. crossed 8 flowers of scarlet geraniums, & with pollen from same plant & not same flower— these produced. 5 pods, containing only 12 seed; & 7 flowers were self-fert & these produced 6 pods containing 21 seed — so that more self-fert. flower set & contained more seed. (2 flowers produced spont, under under net 5 & 1 seed) — The only difference I can imagine that flowers self-fert must have been fertilised with old pollen & flower which were crossed with new pollen; which would, as it might have been thought would have been nest.— (see p. 51 about growth & mem. case of Lobelia.)

Sept. 20 /68/

(The self-fert. seeds have germinated first & best)

(Dec. 6 /68/ The plants in the several pots are now from 4-5 inches to tips of leaves, & no marked difference except in Pot 4. in which crossed has great advantage.)
