March 26— 1871.— Last winter 1870-1871 severe; the crossed plants not in the least injured, not even tips of the last long shoots; but all the self plants killed half way down. i.e. all upper halfs— so now no comparison in size between the self & crossed plants.—
(May 22d Three of the crossed plants have flowered freely, but not one of the selfs.─)
