Tropæolum minus (growing out of doors) 1867
12 fl. crossed & produced 11 pods (i.e. 92 per cent) & yielded 24 good seed (i.e. 2.18 seed average) & 22 of these seeds weighed 24.74 grain
18 fl. were fert with same flower's pollen & produced only 11 pods (i.e. 61 per cent) which yielded 22 good seed. (i e. average of 2.00 seed) & weighed 21.69 grain.
Hence the same number (ie 22) of crossed seed is as
24.74 gr : 21.69 gr :: 100 : x = 87
So much fewer flowers set with own pollen, & these yielded rather fewer & considerably lighter seed.—
(It is clear that 1867 on all following plants very bad season for seeding — wet & cold)
(May 24th 68 in all pots plants 6-7 inches to level tip of leaves & crossed begin to show advantage)
(No difference in period of flowering)
In Pot II. Both sides flowered at same time
(June 26 /68/ in all 4 Pots (I, III & IV) the crossed have flowered first, but in Pot I only a few hours before selfs.)
[68v]
In 1867. Tropæolum "Foxhunter" was I believe of (T. elegans.) long propagated by cuttings, was quite sterile for 16 fl. crossed by other cutting plant & 20 self-fert did not produce one seed.—

Aug. 24. Growth now completed & most seeds gathered
I may say 4 plants on each side, & 2 sticks to each side, & 2 tallest on each side measure measured.
(All the crossed plants up to Sept 17 /68/ produced 243 fairly good seed & all the self-plants produced only 155 seed.—)
