It is well known how the individual monkeys of same species differ mentally.
A man who trains monkeys to act had been in the habit of purchased some common kinds [illeg] Z. Soc, at the fee of for each giving £5. But he is said to be allowed to keep them on for a trial for a few days, & thus came be wd give he wd give double the sum £10 for any one which he chose.
When asked how he cd so soon tell

whether one wd serve, he said it depended entirely on whether they paid close attention to him when he spoke to them;
If when explaining & speaking to them, they were easily distracted, as by catching a fly on the wall [2 words illeg] they were of no use, & if he tried to make them act by beating, they turned sulky.
