NOTE: See record in the Darwin Online manuscript catalogue, enter its Identifier here. Reproduced with permission of the Syndics of Cambridge University Library and William Huxley Darwin. The volumes CUL-DAR80-86 contain material for Darwin's book Descent of man (1871).

Darwin cited this in Descent, vol. 1.

Darwin's acknowledgement on p. 379, n70: "I am greatly indebted to Mr. G. R. Crotch for having sent me numerous prepared specimens of various beetles belonging to these three families and others, as well as for valuable information of all kinds. He believes that the power of stridulation in the Clythra has not been previously observed."

See letter from G. R. Crotch in CUL-DAR81.173.

Crotch specimens

No. 9. Blethisa multipunctata - a species crenulated on elytra, under side. Lines parallel to outer or curved margins near apex - this case margin has raised ridge.

[p. 379, n72: "In the Carabidæ I have examined Elaphrus uliginosus and Blethisa multipunctata, sent to me by Mr. Crotch. In Blethisa the transverse ridges on the furrowed border of the abdominal segment do not come into play, as far as I could judge, in scraping the rasps on the elytra."]

12. Leptorhynchus ♂ near apex of elytron, on right hand side I cannot see on ♀

13. Acalles on elytra, I suppose basal tips

14 Lept. --- do at apex of elytra

15. Centh. echii some difference in 2 elytra but whether of 2 sexes I know not Both elytra have

16. Acalles ♀ on top very plain, lines parallel to [suture] - with tip of elytra.

17. Elaphrus striæ longitudinal on elytra, nearly parallel to convex & note? border of elytron

25 Pachyt Crioceridæ, very broad strid. organ

19 & 20 Both sexes on Thorax

21 & 22 do do (22 organ very small)

23 - to 27 do do do

[175]

Heliopathes gibbus male with broad file on terminal segment of abdomen, with middle line hardly striated with some bristle & consisting of fine membranes & therefore partially divided into 2.

(a) In ♀ all transparent membrane & has trace of striae. - F. [Francis] dissected 2 more ♀ & one ♂same structure. The elytra of ♂ some way from apex are indented & prominent, so as to be rubbing instrument, of which no trace in ♀ Look again for sd [sound] organ

H. cribratostriatus ♂ with fine striae, but divided partially by bristles with 2 organs - ♀ not a trace membranes much thinness & transparent. - Connects elytra of ♂ on each side of suture with 3 or 4 thick large internally ridges. Each very finely transversely striated so as to be parallel to main organ; of which structure not a trace in ♀ - Hence in ♂ the striae of elytra are worked on striae of term. segment of abdomen or against side ridge of abdomen & in this case the ♂ have 2 distinct stridulating organs

[175v]

(a) I examined another pair with same result – I think the inflected margins do not sense too far from apex – All apex on margin traces of longitudinal [prominances] which are lined transversely so finely that I do not think they can act. I mention on account of next species.
