Oct. 12 - - 68. [Euchirus] longimanus from Wallace - carefully examined, no rasp on post. surface of abdomen or on coxæ: = ; but uses edge of elytra, which are a little marked with irregular lines, are rubbed on upper lateral & naked surface of abdomen, a hissing sound is produced, & this cd be produced by rubbing finger on edge of elytra - It is like two new surfaces of pill-box when rubbed together by turning round - Also inner surface of end of femur is shagreened & can be rubbed by movement of post. leg against edge of elytra, & makes a harsher hissing or grating sound - I quite believe that many Beetles make analogous sounds without any special instrument.

[32v]

With a [soften] spec. I cd imitate the case by rubbing the abdomen [several words illeg] against the roughened edges of the elytra; but I can find no proper rasp. & the spec is so unusually large it is not possible that I cd have overlooked it.
