William Scrope. 1843. Days and nights of salmon fishing in the Tweed: With a short account of the natural history and habits of the salmon. London. Darwin cited this in Descent 2: 3, n5: "Another experienced observer (Scrope's 'Days of Salmon Fishing,' p. 60) remarks that the male would, if he could, keep, like the stag, all other males away."
