Proc. Zoolog. Soc. 1868 p. 232. Günther alludes in Plecostomus barbatus & guttatus to "the many bristles on the margin of the snout & the interoperculum form a sexual character & are peculiar to the male. In the female they are very short & sometimes scarcely developed."
