Labrus mixtus, male orange with various bright blue stripes, female bright red with some black marks; hard to say which is brightest. Now this fish is closely allied to

*Crenilabrus which makes nests, male & female taking equal share; see Zoolog Record 1865 p. 194. With respect to the Labrus, G. remarks that black in the lower vertebrate classes is an eminently masculine colour.

There is nothing peculiar in the egg laying of Callionymus maculates.
