"Cupples, Rev. George, 1822-91. Popular writer. 1869 CD letter to in F1874. 1873 CD to C, long letter of general nature about people. CD had recommended Mrs (Anne Jane) C's book Tappy's chicks and other links between nature and human nature, 1872, to Josiah Wedgwood [III]'s family, with whom CD was staying. CCD20." June 1 68/ Mr Blenkiron (who has had such enormous experience in breeding) says Engleheart that a mare in season will take any Horse; but that Horses are very capricious, & they can conjecture no causes, why some will absolutely reject certain mare & instantly take to others - a fine brood mare will be rejected whilst a mare [sent] will be accepted. This occurs so frequently that they have to blind the Horse & remove one mare & replace it by the other. Thus the famous Monarque wd never look or come the dam of Gladiateur, & the above deception had to be practiced.
