Sexual Selection 1841

Nat. Hist of Mamm. animals by W. C. L. Martin

p 461 Semnopithecus nemaeus, cheeks red, face flat & white, shoulders & legs deep red, belly white, back grey, hands & feet black; must be very brightly coloured. In this genus & others curious tufts of hair on sides of face & on top of head; ruffs of hair & manes streaks & bars & spots & various marks on hair of face & head. I think must be ornaments.

p 516. Cercopithecus Cynosurus callosities red, scrotum fine turquoise blue; naked skin of face light flesh-coloured.

520 Cer. sabæus a frill of hair round face of bright but delicate yellow. Face, ears & palms black; tail olive-green above passing into bright yellow at tip. Scrotum green.

525 Cer. diana Beautifully coloured with a frontal crest of white hair & a white peaked beard.

532. Cer. cephus White stripe on face like a broad arrow - whiskers rich golden yellow; tail fulvous-orange; face, except lips, fine violet blue

[50]

throat below chin white, ears black with yellowish white hairs. 537

537 Cer. nictitans. Face bluish black - no beard. In another species skin orange-coloured. (See Fred. Cuviers magnificent drawings of monkeys.) Now from analogy of Birds & lower ani we can hardly doubt their colours are sexual — especially [resembling] Mandrill - if so colours of mane probably do — mem. S. Africa black being admired

Mem savages making ridge & painting stripe like baboons. Do savages paint or ornament buttocks or scrotum? Mem. [Hooker] & self not admiring white

Our Beards a remnant or rudiment of former beards; hairs variable - now man attracts more by mind formerly by appearance.
