Mr D. G. Elliot states (Proc. Zoolog Soc. 1869 p. 589) that the males alone of Pelicanus erythrorhynchus have a thin crest developed on their beaks during the breeding season; these afterwards fall off, like the horns from the heads of stags, so that the shores of an isld in a lake in Nevada, when they breed, was covered with these horny crests.
Elliot, D. G. 1869. A monograph of the genus Pelecanus. Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London 37 no. 3: 571-592, pl. XLIV. [CUL-DAR.LIB.PER-U1391] PDF Darwin cited this in Descent 2: 80, n72: "Mr. D. G. Elliot, in 'Proc. Zool. Soc.' 1869, p. 589."
