Aug 21 /67. Kowalewsky tells me that the male Tetrao urogallus congregate at certain spot for successive years, & make strange crys & fight, so that snow is bloody. They are under guidance of one old male known for several years & not necessarily conqueror, & if he does not come others do not come or come late. Whilst fighting & making crys, may be shot at several times.

Hens which attend others go off during battles with young males — like deer.
