"Matthews, Mary Anne, 1821?-1905. Married Lawrence Ruck. Mother of Mary Elizabeth and Amy Richenda Ruck. Mother-in-law of Francis Darwin. Francis Darwin's book The story of a childhood contains extracts from letters addressed to M about Bernard Richard Meirion Darwin's youth. Known to Bernard as Nain, North Welsh for grandmother. Home Pantlludw, Merionethshire, Wales; picture of in B. Darwin, Green memories, 1928, p. 24. 1890 Was visiting ED in Cambridge "once a year". She taught ED solo whist. There are many entries on Mrs Ruck in ED's diary. After the death of Amy, ED wrote regularly to R and visited her often. In her later years, the correspondence increased.
