Argus Pheasant - 10 ornamented primaries - better say all the primaries

There are 3 secondaries with the elliptic ornaments. *Mr Wood states that the shading on the ball & socket ornaments is placed differently on those nearest the bodies which stand vertical & the outside secondaries which stand nearly horizontal. I do not wish

to dispute this statement, but after comparing 2 feathers from the above position given to me by Mr Gould, & the specimen in the Brit Mus., the difference cd not be perceived by me & others who have looked at the specimens. I may however add that on a few of the basal ball & socket ornaments on the outermost feathers the shading did appear slightly difft. N.B. on the outermost secondaries the external ring is broken at the summit.
