(1

(3) Case of Urosticte Benjamini The ♀ ha has all tail feathers white except black tips to 4 central feathers; Are the tips each black. In male how many of central tail-feathers are tipped with white? Are the tips of same shape & size in male as in female? if tips of 4 central tail-feathers in ♀ differ at all in tail, that case would work

[Descent 2: 40, n3 and 4: "Quoted by Mr. Gould, 'Introduction to the Trochilidæ,' 1861, p. 29; Gould, ibid. p. 52."]

(over)

[in margin:] How much white in general Plumage. D. of Argyll says so

[Descent 2: 151, n49: "'The Reign of Law,' 1867, p. 247."]

[46v]

In Metallura, next genus to Urosticte - are the 4 middle feathers especially ornamented it wd make case better for me, if so -

How many tail-feathers?? 10 I suppose

[Descent 2: 152.]

Mr. Gould

(2

p. I suppose that the young of Heliothrix auriculata resemble the female in absence of gorget & ear tuft, & in length of tail; I suppose that the tail of young male admittedly becomes reduced in length, or does not continue growing, (?) as he becomes adult.

If I am wrong & young male resembles to a certain extent adult male, then case comes under Chap VI

[Descent 2: 188.]

Mr. Gould - Do the young of Lampornis, (or other genera) in which females have more brilliant tail than the males in parts more brilliant than males, resemble the adult males in such parts. Ask what is characters of young of both sexes Lampornis. I have said not known.

[Descent 2: 168.]
