Music

May 22d 69

Progenitors of Man, if we judge from wide-spread analogy that must proceed into inarticulate musical cadences to charm the female & triumph over other males. - (Exceptions - Mycetes Rengger - large vocal organs with object like song of Bird) as soon as by change of [illeg] & sound languages invented, it cd be natural that wd shd later place of inarticulate manner & some shd become song - as the precursor of rhythm & poetry, & it has supposed song [illeg] that thus wd apparently have been the earliest art known to Man

[A7v]

With this deeply dyed instinct for music it is song more chiefly directed to form it is not singing that love shd generate feelings of adoration - that beseeching mates shd become plaintive - that triumph shd give rise to the glorious notes of [illeg] &c - It includes singing that more strong emotion to instinct of musical cadences shd achieve in one communication - Mr H. S. [Herbert Spencer] first in my opinion effect that cause, when he desires music for the cadence used in excited talk, what better are desires for physiological causes wh he does not specify - why throughout A. King. musical notes shd be agreeable (& shd conceivably have been developed) I can in me explain that only brilliant colours are agreeable or cause pleasure.
