[A76]

G. M. Sproat. Scenes & Studies of Savage Life 1868 p 25.  Vancouver Isl. "The mens beards & whiskers are deficient, probably from the old alleged custom, now seldom practised, of extirpating the hairs with small shells. This custom, continued from one generation to another, would perhaps at last produce a race distinguishable, as these natives are by a thin & straggling growth of beard & whiskers".

Sproat, Gilbert Malcolm. 1868. Scenes and studies of savage life. London: Smith & Elder. Darwin cited this in Descent 2: 348, n57: "On the natives of Vancouver Island, see Sproat, 'Scenes and Studies of Savage Life,' 1868, p. 25."
