Ibis 1860 p. 265. Salvin on Humming Birds is inclined to think that that they are polygamous at least never saw ♂ helping at nest - Salvin says he believes Yarrell describes. (see MacGillivray) female ruff standing by on tuft of grass, whilst males fight.

Salvin is sure about inequality - thinks males generally in excess - Remarked if a shower appear when Lepidoptera abound all disappear instantly - so females may be overlooked.
