Audubon III (cont.) Speculum

p. 250 Mergus cucullatus, ♂ speculum white in ♀ speculum greyish-white. Y ♂s after first moult still resemble ♀s, but have the speculum white; so gain this before other masculine similarities

258 Rallus Carolinus ♀ differs considerably from ♂. Y ♂ is intermediate after first moult between ♀ & ♂, but more like former. Intermediate

416 Egret Ardea rufescens. Egret perfectly white & Y of the species white, but adult of both sexes which are quite alike - & coloured purplish & greyish-blue Y. nearly 2 years old pure white

614 Harlequins Duck ♂ takes 3 years to acquire perfect plumage though may breed 2d year. The ♀ perfect in 2d year - So that there is no necessity for ♀ to take longer time to acquire perfect plumage}
