Darwin cited this in Descent 2d ed., p. 85, n52: "Dr. A. Moschkau informs me that he knew a starling which never made a mistake in saying in German 'good morning' to persons arriving, and 'goodbye, old fellow,' to those departing. I could add several other such cases."

Dr Alfred Moschkau informs me that "he knew such a (a starling) of which a printed little book related all that he was able to speak. This little creature never [insertion:] made a mistake mistook in a greeting [illeg], his "Good morning" was always for the coming [insertion:] to persons arriving,

his Goodbye old fellow to those the departing one.
