Ap 1. 1873 Descent - Intelligence

The keepers have noticed that the Chimpanzee was very curious if they pretended something was going on in next room by peeking into it, & he wd try to look thro' the cracks. One day he was let loose in the Gt Monkey H. & got on the top of the cages & they cd not with their whips, or by any means, drive him or catch him. It occurred to them to go to one of the windows at the end & look out intently & they then cried out "He's coming — he's coming" — & then ran as quick as they cd to the Chimps apartment; no sooner did he see that than down he came as quick as he could, thinking there was some danger. They have tried this several times, always with success. Once to punish him, they got in first & shut the door & he howled violently to get in.
