(Descent of Man)

Remorse you regret bitterly a bad action

Shame you think what others think of your conduct or appearance.

Remorse never causes a Blush. A man may feel remorse for a lie, but he wd blush if found guilty before others.

Jan 1867 Like Pride & Vanity

(not quite true for a man may feel ashamed of himself for having fibbed, but will not blush by himself

Descent of Man

good shows that mans love of approbation & praise will not account for remorse - The difficulty I see is to account for very strong feeling of remorse - I presume long education necessary - what can be stronger than migratory instinct - or maternal instinct.
