This is an abstract of the letter to Darwin from T. N. Staley 12 February 1874 (Correspondence vol. 22, p. 72 [CUL-DAR 89-188-190] and F3417.) Darwin cited this information in Descent 2d ed., pp. 186-7. Thomas Nettleship Staley was bishop of Honolulu, Hawaii, until 1870.
