The males of affixed animals being thus led to emit their fertilising element, it is natural that any of their descendants, are thus which rose in the scale & became locomotive, should still retain the same habit; & should closely approach the female, instead of being approached by her, in order so that the fertilising element should have as not run the risk of in short a transit through the sea as possible as though the sea. There are also some few of animals, of cases in which the females alone are fixed, & in with this the males must be the seekers. With respect to forms, which were primordially free or locomotive, it is difficult to see perceive how why the males of all should always have invariably gained the habit of approaching the females, instead of being approached by her them. But in the cases it is necessary in order that the males should have become efficient seekers it is clearly necessary in all cases that they should be endowed with strong passions.
