Dutch Descent of Man p 414 Note 5

Not only do the Jews differ from the people in whose midst they live in respect to the proportion of male births, but also in theall their circumstances of vitality. Thus Dr. Lubach (Album der Natur 1868 p 293) states that from 1822 to 1840 in Prussia 2161 out of every 100,000 Jews died, as against 2961 of the not-Jews. These died deaths were distributed over the various periods of life as follows:-

Table

According to Crebrassa (quoted by Lubach ibid.)

In Algeria the mean death rate of the Jews from 1844-1849 was 33.4 per 1000 as against 57.2 of Europeans. In the town of Algiers with its suburbs there were 1553 deaths & 1234 births amongst the Europeans, 514 deaths & 331 deaths amongst the Musselmen, and 187 deaths & 211 births amongst the Jews.

In the town of Frankfurt, according to Dr. de Neufville (quoted by Lubach ibid.)

Table (see foot note)

In the Netherlands Prussia Rheinsh Bavara [Rijn-Beijeren] Switzerland Belgium & Algiers the yearly increase of population of the Jews (accord to Lubach ibid.) is greater than amongst the fellow countrymen

Dr. Teixeira de Mattos after an examination of 7 years (1856-62) comes to the following conclusions in his Verslag &c. with respect to Amsterdam.

1. The proportion of the live-born amongst the Israelites is probably greater, & that of the still born less, at any rate certainly not greater than in the rest of the population.

2. It is to be much doubted whether the chance of life in children during the 2d -3rd & 4th years of life is more unfavourable amongst the Israelites than amongst the Xtians.

3. From 4 years of age the Israelites are distinguished from the fellow townsmen by a smaller death rate – at each period of life, especially between 20 – 60 years of ages.

4. The localities principally inhabited by Israelites are all distinguished by a more favourable death rate which is inexplicable merely by their favourable situation & by the local circumstances

5. The total death rate is 2.06 per cent amongst the Israelites as against 2.87 of the remaining population.
