Religious opinions Feb 1871

When a boy at school used to go home in half holidays & run back as hard as he cd to be in time for calling over. always waited up to the last minute & then ran & prayed as he ran, firmly believed the prayer had a v. good effect.

~~When abt 16~~ Whilst at school read Law's Serious Call¹ which has a g^teffect on his mind for nearly a year

Quite orthodox all thro' the Voyage of the Beagle. Remembers saying on some occasions, forgets what on board ship, "Well, if the Bible is true that is wrong, you know" wh. was received with roars of laughter - tho' the officers were religious men.
