"High Elms. Estate of about 3,000 acres marched with Down House grounds. c.1842 Home of, and rebuilt, after burning down, by, Sir John William Lubbock, and then of his son Sir John L, Baron Avebury. Visits by the Darwin's and social occasions are recorded in ED's diary between 1855-95. Mansion burned to the ground in 1967. Now a public park and nature reserve."
"Lubbock, Sir John, Bart, 1834 Apr. 30-1913 May 28. First child of Sir John William L. Statesman, banker and man of science. Home: High Elms near Down. L was the closest of CD's younger friends and frequent visitor to Down House from childhood. CD discussed evolution with before Origin." Many thanks for your cheque. It was very good of you indeed.

I have shewn your letter to my father. He says he rather

exhausted himself over his Paper for the Linnean Society, but wants to know if he might repeat himself for the Christ's Magazine.

I will try and find something for the Exhibition when I get to High Elms; and my Father says

he will be delighted to let you have anything which would be of interest. He has one volume containing Darwins Letters to him. Would that be suitable?
