The J.C. Simpson Collection of Darwiniana, McGill University

An introduction by John van Wyhe

James Crawford Simpson (1876-1944) was a Canadian biologist who studied at the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada from 1896 to 1907. He then spent five months at the Marine Biological Station at Plymouth in the UK. During that summer he was awarded an '1851 Research Fellowship' at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. (The New Zealand physicist Ernest Rutherford was awarded such a Fellowship in 1895.) Emmanuel welcomed overseas students and was just down Regent Street from Christ's College where, over the next two years, Simpson developed a close friendship with the zoologist and Fellow of Christ's, Arthur Everett Shipley (1861-1927), from 1910 Master of Christ's. Shipley was also secretary to Cambridge's Museums and Lecture Rooms Syndicate which gave him a leadership role over the university laboratories and museums. Much of that time Simpson lived in lodgings at 39 Clarendon Street just behind Emmanuel and Parkers Piece and this address is found on some of the papers in this collection. According to Marie Sanderson's Griffith Taylor: Antarctic scientist and pioneer geographer (1988) Simpson gained a reputation as rebel against some of the rules in Cambridge, such as wearing gowns out of College, to be out after 10pm and informal rules such as first years must not wear a bowler hat, dark trousers or shake hands with a man twice in term.

As the 1909 centenary of Charles Darwin's birth approached, Shipley and Simpson became the leading players in organizing Cambridge commemoration events, especially the extraordinary exhibition of documents, artefacts and artworks at Christ's College and various social events. Together they wrote to members of the Darwin family and others who might have items to lend to the exhibition. Shipley and Simpson co-edited the catalogue of the exhibition: Darwin centenary: the portraits, prints and writings of Charles Robert Darwin, exhibited at Christ's College, Cambridge 1909.  (Text)

See T. D. A. Cockerell's account of the 1909 events: The Darwin celebration at Cambridge. The Popular Science Monthly 76 (January): 23-31. F3515

Shipley oversaw the creation of a magnificent album of press cuttings, invitations, menus, speeches, photographs and other memorabilia of the 1909 celebrations which is now in the Old Library at Christ's. But Shipley gave Simpson a large collection of his own more extensive Darwin centenary correspondence. Simpson's collection may indeed surpass that of Christ's College itself and it is a superb and important archive with information found nowhere else.

The collection contains letters from all of Darwin's sons, William, George, Francis, Leonard and Horace as well as the little known daughter Elizabeth or 'Bessie', then living at Traverston, West Road, Cambridge. There is a letter from Darwin's friend J. D. Hooker and a postcard from Ernst Haeckel, a note from A. R. Wallace which makes a very casual reference to his 1858 Ternate essay manuscript, a photograph of Darwin that once belonged to him, a manuscript draft leaf of Darwin's Insectivorous plants (1875) and personal cheques signed by Darwin and Emma Darwin. There is a letter to Shipley from the geographer and travel writer F. H. H. Guillemard offering a photograph of Darwin that the Darwin family had not seen before. It was displayed in the exhibition and is still in the Old Library in Christ's today. See an introduction here.

In all the collection here consists of over 180 items across 430 beautiful colour images courtesy of the Osler Library of the History of Medicine, McGill University. With thanks to Dr Mary Hague-Yearl and the staff at the Osler Library for extremely helpful assistance and permission to reproduce their images in Darwin Online. Many thanks also to Christine Chua for corrections and improvements to the catalogue and even transcribing the items in the collection, making its contents searchable for everyone.
