Joseph Dalton Hooker (1817-1911) was Darwin's greatest personal friend and confidant, much more so than either Lyell or Huxley, and provided much plant material for Darwin from Kew. (Paul van Helvert & John van Wyhe, Darwin: A Companion, 2021.)

TELEGRAMS, WINDLESHAM

Decr. 31 1908

THE CAMP,

NEAR SUNNINGDALE.

My dear Shipley

The only perennial relic of Darwin which I possess & which might be of interest to the proposed Exhibition, the aneroid which hung over the chimney piece of his study is the aneroid & which he habitually consulted. It is of course at the disposal of the "celebration" if thought suitable. Mrs Darwin gave it to me as a memorial of him.
