Dear Simpson,

I am rather concerned to find that I am probably too late to prevent the things from having gone back to their respective owners. When I returned here last week, I found a number of urgent matters that I could not put on one side, and I did not succeed in getting my letters to the Darwin family written at once.

I now enclose a list of all

[1v]

I have borrowed. With the exception of Shipley, everyone to whom I had written has replied. They have all lent everything I asked for.

I have added to the list what you have so kindly promised to lend, in order to have the list as complete as possible.

I am most grateful to you for the trouble you are

taking and have still to take for us.

I have just sent you a telegram containing the numbers of the objects I have borrowed.

In case there is any discrepancy between the telegram and the written list, you may take the latter as the authoritative one.

In case any of the things have gone back to their respective owners, will you kindly let me know, in order that I may write to them.

I remain

yours sincerely

S. F. Harmer
