p. 193 thinks primordial layer (ie utricle) or proteine contents are Endowed with contractility, the enclosing cellular walls giving the required elasticity.— elasticity seated in cell-walls & independent of vitality

Irritation acts on a momentary death & paralyses the expansive power before present ─ stamen — when really dead stamen shorten greatly

p. 196 Hofmeister's theory is theory is turgescence from excitement.—

p 198 — irritable tissues do not differ from others (give note to my remark). To change forms from excitement & revert to former state from elasticity, the characteristic of the living cell. (N.B no doubt greatly increased when useful)

201. the dead stamens are half-as-short again, & are as elastic as threads of Indian-rubber.—
