Introduction by John van Wyhe
The London Library was established in 1841 as a private subscription library on the first floor of 49 Pall Mall. In 1845 it moved to 14 St James's Square. Members were able to join for a fee and the annual membership in the early years cost £2. The chief instigator for the founding of the Library was Scottish writer Thomas Carlyle who was dissatisfied with the British Library, including the inability to borrow its books. Carlyle's neighbour and friend was Darwin's brother Erasmus who joined as one of the new Library's first members in 1841. Charles Darwin also joined in 1841. The London Library's records show him joining in May but his Account Books (Down House) record "London Library with entrance" for £8 on 16 November. In April 1842 he purchased a catalogue of the Library (Anon. 1842. Catalogue of the London Library, established MDCCCXLI, at no. 49, Pall Mall. PDF) In his personal library catalogue of 1875 (CUL-DAR240) we find that Darwin at that time had two later catalogues for the Library:
Harrison, Robert. 1875. Catalogue of the London Library, 12 St. James's Square, S.W. with preface, laws and regulations, list of members, and classified index of subjects. 4th ed. London: London Library. PDF
Harrison, Robert. 1869-1875. Catalogue of the London Library. Additions to the library. 1869-1875. (published quarterly).
The Library's early borrowing ledgers are incomplete, but about 200 records for Darwin's book borrowing have survived. These were recently published online https://www.londonlibrary.co.uk/darwin and in detail here: https://www.londonlibrary.co.uk/images/PDFs/DarwinBorrowingRecords.pdf
We contacted the Library's archivist, Nathalie Belkin, to help identify some of the titles borrowed by Darwin. With her permission, the Darwin borrowing records are reproduced here. Each entry is given with the corresponding record for the work from Darwin's reading notebooks, if there is one, and a full reference. Almost all of the corresponding titles that have been found, are in the first of his three reading notebooks:
'Books to be read / Books Read' (1838-51). Text & image CUL-DAR119
'Books [read]' (1838-58). Text & image CUL-DAR120
'Books Read / Books to be Read' (1852-60). Text & image CUL-DAR128
These notebooks reveal a few other titles Darwin borrowed that are not found in the surviving London Library records:
"Prichards. Nat: History of Man. Bailliere. 1.10 must be studied. London Library read
Knox on Anatomy & Art [R. Knox 1852]. London Library (read)
Richardson Russian Empire 1. vol. (Erasmus) London Library
Knox Races of Mankind a curious Book. (Blyth). in London Liby.— (read)"
The London Library's records have allowed us to refine many of the references in Darwin's reading notebooks. And, more importantly, we find here many titles and authors that Darwin read that we did not otherwise know about.
Darwin's wide reading at this time is interesting but it is important to note that some of the titles borrowed were for his wife, Emma. Some of the German and French literature and some religious works recorded were clearly hers.
Nathalie Belkin also kindly shared the following details on Darwin's relatives from the Library's records:
