Darwin 2009 commemorations

2009 was the 150th anniversary of the publication of Origin of Species (24 November 1859) and the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth (12 February 1809). This page lists the associated worldwide events and publications.

Submissions for this list (which is still being updated even though 2009 is over) should be emailed to Dr John van Wyhe in the form: 'day month year title. Sponsor/venue. Link.' e.g. 24 Nov. 2009 event... or the proper bibliographical format for publications etc.

Items are loosely grouped into 'Events', 'Publications' and 'Films, documentaries & performances'. Although this list is far from comprehensive, it is the largest list of worldwide Darwin events in 2009.

13 March - 24 April 2009 Darwin & the Golden Age of Zoology" exhibit: As part of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside's Darwin 1809-1859-2009 commemoration of the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of the Origin of Species, the Library presents "Darwin and the Golden Age of Zoology". The exhibit consists of books, illustrations, specimens, and artifacts related to the many scientific surveys and expeditions of the late eighteenth to early twentieth centuries, of which Darwin's voyage on HMS Beagle is among the best known, and perhaps the most momentous. Included are British or American editions of most of Darwin's books, sumptuously illustrated systematic and zoogeographic monographs from the period, and more recently collected zoological and geological specimens. Highlights include a first American edition of Darwin's Life and Letters (1887), P.H. Gosse's Birds of Jamaica (1847), and a copy of J.E. Gray's Synopsis of the Crocodilia (1867) perhaps once owned by Darwin, and bearing what may be his signature. The materials exhibited are from the Library, the Department of Biological Sciences, and the personal collections of Frank Egerton, Gregory Mayer, and Sean Murphy.

30 March – 11 Sept. 2009 Kents Cavern: The Darwin anniversary excavations. The country's leading experts in the palaeolithic are planning to conduct the first major excavations in Kents Cavern since the 1920s. They hope the information recovered from new fieldwork will contribute to widely-debated issues in palaeoanthropology. Most notably, they will concentrate on the origins of the cave's use as a human shelter, and they hope to establish firmer dates for the first occupation of the cave by Neanderthals and early members of our own species. 9-30 Oct. 2009 This view of life - Evolutionary art in the year of Darwin. Hosts: College of Biological Sciences and College of Arts (University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada). http://arts.uoguelph.ca/eayd2009/
Ed Video Media Arts Center (Guelph, Ontario, Canada) www.edvideo.org/gallery-events/exhibitions/on-this-view-of-life-evolutionary-art-for-the-year-of-darwin
Description: This view of life - Evolutionary art in the year of Darwin The investigation of evolutionary theory is not limited to the lab, field or fossil bed. Darwinian theory, after a century and a half, continues to inspire creativity, which perpetuates the evolution of these ideas in their own right. Forms of expression can be compared to instruments of observation, magnifying some aspects of evolution while masking or distorting others. These exhibits offer unique perspectives into the nature and scope of biological novelty, organic variation, and evolving life forms. "This view of life" is the culmination of celebrations in the 'Year of Darwin' here at Guelph as it showcases a unique melding together of artistic and scientific disciplines little explored in other celebrations elsewhere. This group exhibition presents recent work from 10 contemporary Canadian artists (including a faculty and graduate of the University of Guelph) selected because of their interest in exploring evolutionary themes in their work. The reception will feature static and video artwork, biological specimens, and presentations by project participants. Artwork will be exhibited at the Ed Video Gallery and inside and outside of the Science Complex Atrium, University of Guelph for the duration of the show.

2009, 01.21 Charles Darwin 200th anniversay concert. Wigmore Hall, 7.30pm A special concert at the Wigmore Hall will include the world premier of Michael Stimpson's new Darwin inspired work, The Age of Wonders. Two of the four parts, The Man who walked with Henslow (violin and piano) and An Entangled Bank (sting orchestra) will be premiered in the programme, www.wigmorehall. org.uk.

British composer Michael Stimpson has been invited to the Northern Territory, Australia, to see the first full production of Age of Wonders, his new work written to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin. It was performed by the Darwin Symphony Orchestra in a celebration event called Origins held on 1 July in the city park. The complete work is in four parts. The Man Who Walked with Henslow is a piece for violin and piano, which explores Darwin's early life and influences. The Beagle is a piece for a string quartet that follows the voyage and how Darwin and Fitzroy see the world begins to diverge during its course. The complexity of the Age of Wonders has further evolved in An Entangled Bank, the piece for a string orchestra, which focuses on Darwin's life in Down House and the writing and publication of On the Origin of Species. The final section Transmutations is for a full orchestra. It is a complex piece of four sections weaving the strong elements from the previous sections which have survived by 'natural selection'. The work reminds us of the complexity of Darwin's ideas before returning to the solo violin from the first section, the warmth of Charles Darwin.
